Message from Mayor Joseph Oglesby

CITY OF MONROEVILLE ALABAMA

Mayor Joseph Oglesby
Whether this is your first trip to Monroeville or if you are a frequent visitor, I want to personally extend to you a warm welcome to Monroeville. Here in the heart of Southwest Alabama, you will find true Southern Hospitality.

Please stop by our Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Office for maps and guides of things to do while you are in town. Whether you are interested in shopping, dining, nature or history these organizations can help you plan your time here.

While you are our guest, please enjoy everything Monroeville has to offer. Our Historic Downtown Square boasts shopping, dining and the Old Monroe County Courthouse Museum.

From antiques and collectables, books, art, gifts for home and baby, a spa to pamper yourself, fabrics, clothes, there is definitely something for everyone on the Square.

There are also restaurants and shops located in all areas of Monroeville, so feel free to venture throughout the city.
A self-guided walking tour using the QSR reader on your smart phone is also a fantastic way to take a tour of historic locations in town at your own speed. On this tour, you will see homes, historic markers acknowledging the home sites of some our most famous residents, and important buildings from Monroeville’s past.

If nature is more of an interest, take a walk around the lake at Whitey Lee Park. While there you can enjoy seeing diverse types of plantings and trees, along with ducks and geese.

Veterans’ Park is home to the City of Monroeville ball fields. You can also play with your smaller visitors on our newly improved playground. Our Anne Farrish Community Center is home to another playground and Community Garden.

As a Tree City USA, Monroeville is home to an arboretum that contains various species of trees and plantings. A nature walk is located on Veterans’ Drive. This paved walking trail is a great spot to experience nature while in town. If you have your clubs, play a round at Vanity Fair Golf Club.

The jewel in our crown is the Old Monroe County Courthouse. Through the dedication and arduous work of many citizens, this building was saved from demolition and was restored. This early 20th Century courthouse is now home to a museum like no other. It celebrates everything that is Monroeville. Please visit the exhibits as they teach you of our history.

And where would be a better place to see a performance of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee, our most famous citizen, used her inspiring novel to open Monroeville up to not only the nation, but to the world.

Monroeville is a city that is growing. Our focus is on public safety, quality of life and expanding our economy. We would love to have you come be a part of this growth. If you are a young couple looking for that small town feel to raise a family, a person trying to find their way through a new experience or a retiree interested in slowing down and enjoying life, we have something to offer you.

From everyone at the City of Monroeville, we hope you have a wonderful visit to our community.

If there is anything we can do for you while you are with us, please don’t hesitate to contact City Hall.

Welcome to Monroeville, the Literary Capital of Alabama!
